Also, participants will be able to ask questions of the author on other math topics or to learn strategies for addressing the conceptual issues addressed in the book.
On-Site Professional Development Services
Teaching Mathematics Conceptually: K–6 Sessions
Our K–6 mathematics professional development sessions are designed to help teachers better understand fundamental mathematics concepts and how they relate to algebra and other more complex topics. These sessions are offered as a series or as stand-alone experiences.
Fundamental Fractions: More Than Parts of a Pizza
A high percentage of students in the United States lack a conceptual understanding of fractions, even after studying the subject for several years. In this session, participants will focus on fractions as a concept and why the operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—are performed differently with fractions than with whole numbers. This session also emphasize connections to critical topics such as proportional reasoning.
Building the Foundations for Proportional Reasoning
Establishing the foundation for proportional reasoning at the elementary level can help students master more complex topics in secondary school. In this session participants will understand proportional reasoning through topics concurrently taught at elementary grade levels. This session is a comprehensive extension of the ratio and proportional reasoning components of Session 1.
Demystifying Fundamental Concepts and Operations
Providing students with a solid foundation in fundamental mathematics begins with deep yet straightforward definitions of mathematical ideas and a thorough understanding of why basic operations work as they do. This session establishes how critical topics connect to related concepts and to one another. Participants will explore and understand the language and symbolism associated with these concepts, topics not usually addressed by content standards and traditional instruction.
Teaching Mathematics Conceptually: 7–12 Sessions
Our experts offer customized professional development for grades 7–12 math teachers, helping them develop deep understanding of fundamental mathematics concepts. Our services emphasize the connections across grade levels and schools so that students' understanding of fundamental mathematics can support the learning of more complex and abstract mathematics.
